GOP Knows Better Than CIA?

Image ID 289640 by sarilonka, smallestThis Stupid Ass Award goes to Senator John Barrasso (Republican-Wyoming). Senator Barrasso thinks he’s smarter than the CIA when it comes to just exactly what threatens US National Security.

The Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2010 is wending it’s way through Congress. Senator Barrasso offered an amendment that would prohibit the CIA’s Center on Climate Change & National Security from using any of the Defense Department’s money.

Apparently some in the GOP won’t acknowledge climate change, even when the CIA says it impacts national security! Or even if they’re not studying climate change per se, but just the physical manifestations of it and how those physical changes might make the US less secure.

The charter of the CIA group is to study & advise policy makers on:

…the national security impact of phenomena such as desertification, rising sea levels, population shifts, and heightened competition for natural resources.

Whether you believe climate change is real or a fiction created by the vast left-wing conspiracy is irrelevant. The facts are plain:   Sea levels are rising.  Icebergs are melting.  Water is getting scarce and even the all-action, man-of-few-words James Bond figured that one out in Quantum of SolacePopulation in the Third World is booming and most of those people live in crushing poverty in countries led by unstable governments.

The CIA’s own charter says they’re studying physical phenomena, not trying to determine if climate change exists or doesn’t.

Way to go, Barrasso! I guess you think you’re smarter than the CIA’s best and brightest. You think it’s OK for Americans to ignore simple, scientific facts which might impact our national security. What a doofus.

Thank goodness 60 Senators banded together and defeated Barrasso’s head-in-the-sand, politically motivated amendment.

Senator Barrasso, you’re a Stupid Ass.
